ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Shipping a car from the USA to Dubai & the UAE
One of the busiest US vehicle export lanes in the world β relocating expats, returning residents, collectors, and buyers importing US auction vehicles.
Nearly every car shipped from the United States to the UAE arrives through Jebel Ali Port in Dubai β the largest port in the Middle East and one of the best-served container terminals on the planet, with weekly sailings from US East Coast ports. Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port and Sharjah handle the remainder. The move is two legs: we collect your vehicle from any US ZIP code door-to-door, truck it to the departure port on open transport (or enclosed for exotics), handle CBP title validation and the AES export filing, then the ocean leg runs 30β40 days via the Suez Canal.
The UAE is the most import-friendly market in the Gulf: no strict vehicle age limit for personal imports, salvage and auction vehicles are accepted, and customs charges are a flat 5% duty plus 5% VAT. The catch sits after customs β every imported vehicle must pass technical testing before the RTA (or the relevant emirate authority) will register it, and US-spec cars carry practical trade-offs in the Gulf that we cover below. Shipping to the Kingdom instead? Rules there are far stricter β read our USA to Saudi Arabia guide before assuming your vehicle qualifies.
What we see on this lane: the biggest single cost lever is your departure port choice. East Coast departures (Newark, Baltimore, Savannah) to Jebel Ali price consistently lower and sail more frequently than West Coast options β sometimes enough that trucking a California car cross-country to an East Coast port still beats a Pacific routing. The second lever is consolidation: if you can wait a week or two for a shared container to fill, you save $1,000+ versus a sole container. The third is timing your title β CBP validation 72 hours before loading is non-negotiable, and lienholder delays are the most common reason cars miss their vessel.
β Booking Notice: Jebel Ali runs efficiently year-round, but expect slower customs processing around Ramadan and Eid, and heavier vessel demand during the summer relocation wave when expats move to the Gulf ahead of the school year. Documents must be complete 72+ hours before vessel cutoff β book 2β3 weeks ahead of your target sailing.

Straight answers on cost, GCC vs US spec, auction cars, and timing for the Emirates.
Most shipments run $1,800 to $2,500 for a standard sedan in a shared container from an East Coast port. RoRo runs $1,700 to $2,400 for running vehicles, and a sole-use 20ft container runs $3,000 to $4,200. Inland US pickup adds $300 to $800 depending on distance to the departure port, and SUVs or pickups add $300 to $500. UAE-side charges are separate: 5% duty plus 5% VAT on assessed value, plus testing and registration fees.
Ocean transit from US East Coast ports to Jebel Ali runs roughly 30 to 40 days via the Suez Canal. Add 5 to 10 days on the US side for pickup and export processing, plus 2 to 5 days for UAE customs β Jebel Ali is one of the fastest-clearing ports in the world. Plan on 40 to 55 days door to door. West Coast departures add 1 to 2 weeks.
The UAE requires left-hand-drive vehicles and β unlike Saudi Arabia β has no strict age limit for personal imports. Customs charges 5% duty plus 5% VAT. The real gate is after customs: every imported vehicle must pass technical testing before the RTA in Dubai (or the equivalent authority in other emirates) will register it. Vehicles with severe structural damage can fail testing, and any US accident or salvage history follows the car into UAE registration records.
You can legally import and register a US-spec vehicle if it passes testing β thousands do every year. The trade-offs are practical: GCC-spec cars carry cooling systems rated for 50Β°C summers, UAE dealer warranties generally don't cover US-spec imports, and GCC-spec vehicles command a meaningful resale premium. If you're keeping the car long-term, a well-maintained US import is a fine value play. If resale matters, GCC spec wins β price that into your import math before shipping.
Yes β the UAE is one of the largest destinations for US auction vehicles worldwide, and unlike Saudi Arabia it accepts salvage and repairable titles. We collect directly from Copart, IAAI, or Manheim yards, handle non-running vehicles with winch-equipped carriers, truck to the departure port, and complete the export filing. Two cautions: salvage history appears in UAE registration systems and affects resale, and severely damaged vehicles can fail the testing required for registration.
Jebel Ali is well served by both, which isn't true of most Gulf ports. RoRo can price slightly lower and suits ordinary running vehicles, but prohibits personal items and exposes the car to more handling. Shared containers (2β4 cars in a 40ft) offer better protection at similar cost. For luxury, classic, or exotic vehicles, a sole-use container is the standard choice β combined with enclosed transport on the US inland leg.
On the US side: the original lien-free title, a bill of sale or invoice, and your passport copy. CBP must validate the original title at least 72 hours before vessel loading β a title sitting with a lender is the most common reason cars miss their sailing. On the UAE side: customs import clearance, payment of duty and VAT, and the testing certificate for registration. Dubai clearance at Jebel Ali typically completes within days.
RoRo carriers prohibit personal items entirely. In containers, some forwarders permit a limited amount of declared household goods, but UAE customs can inspect, tax, or delay shipments over undeclared contents β and anything restricted under UAE law creates real problems. Our standing advice on this lane: ship the car empty apart from factory equipment, and move belongings separately.
Rarely, and this surprises people: US federal law (FMVSS) generally prohibits importing vehicles not manufactured to US standards unless they're at least 25 years old. A US-spec car originally exported from the States can return, and 25-plus-year-old classics qualify under the exemption β but a GCC-spec car bought in Dubai typically cannot be registered in the US at any price. Check the vehicle's manufacture standard before planning a return shipment.
We handle the complete US side directly: door-to-door pickup from any ZIP code, port delivery, CBP title validation, and AES export filing. The ocean leg runs through licensed international freight partners we use on every international shipment, with vetted clearance agents at Jebel Ali. One point of contact, one price for the door-to-port scope.
