The Pricing Engine
Why this calculator isn't a static spreadsheet
Real carrier rates on real lanes β not three-year-old averages
Most car shipping calculators return a number pulled from industry averages β sometimes years out of date. By the time a carrier actually quotes you, the rate has moved $200 to $500 in either direction. That's the bait-and-switch experience customers complain about.
The Navi calculator works off live carrier lane data β what carriers are actually accepting right now on your specific origin-to-destination route. The number you see is the number we book at. If carrier rates shift after you book, we cover the difference up to $200 (the Navi Price Guarantee).
This page walks through what your route is likely to cost based on real shipments, how the pricing engine actually builds your quote, and when the calculator might run off β yes, sometimes, and we'll tell you when.

Quick Decision
Open or enclosed β the 30-second answer
Most people don't need to overthink this
Pick open transport if:
- Your vehicle is a daily driver β sedan, SUV, truck, or motorcycle
- Market value is under $70,000
- You want the lowest price
- Standard road exposure is acceptable
Consider enclosed instead if:
- Vehicle value is over $70,000
- It's a classic, vintage, exotic, or custom build
- It has rare paint or sentimental value
- You're shipping through winter mountain passes

How It Works
How the calculator builds your quote in 60 seconds
Four steps. Zero phone calls. No spam follow-up.
Enter pickup and delivery ZIPs
The engine maps your origin and destination to active carrier lanes in our dispatch network. Lanes with more carriers running them right now get tighter, more accurate pricing.
Add vehicle details
Vehicle type (sedan, SUV, truck, motorcycle) and condition (running or non-running) adjust the per-mile rate. Larger vehicles take more deck space and price higher.
Choose open or enclosed
Open runs 40β60% cheaper. Enclosed is the right call for vehicles over $70,000 in value, classics, exotics, and custom builds. The calculator prices both.
Get your quote
The engine returns a price based on live carrier rates on your lane β not static averages. Lock the rate or request alternatives. No upfront payment. No commitment until a carrier is confirmed.
Transparent Pricing
What car shipping actually costs
Per-mile rates step down as distance increases β the math of carrier economics
Auto transport is priced per mile, but the rate steps down as distance increases. Carriers have fixed costs per trip β fuel, driver pay, equipment wear β and those costs spread across more miles on long-haul loads. Short hauls carry a higher per-mile rate because the fixed costs are concentrated.
Per-mile rate by distance
| Distance bucket | Open per-mile rate | Typical total (sedan) |
|---|---|---|
| 0β500 miles | $0.75 | $450 β $650 |
| 500β1,000 miles | $0.65 | $650 β $850 |
| 1,000β1,500 miles | $0.55 | $850 β $1,100 |
| 1,500β2,000 miles | $0.49 | $1,000 β $1,300 |
| 2,000+ miles | $0.35 | $1,100 β $1,500 |

How we set the price β 6 inputs the engine actually uses
Most brokers hide their math. Here's ours.
Other calculators output a number with no explanation, then surprise you with a different one at booking. We'd rather show you what goes into the quote so you can sanity-check it yourself. Six inputs drive every price:
Distance bucket
Per-mile rate steps down as distance increases. A 200-mile haul costs $0.75/mile; a 2,200-mile haul costs $0.35/mile. Fixed costs spread over more miles.
Vehicle class
Sedans set the base rate. SUVs add ~$150 on a 1,000-mile lane. Trucks add ~$250. Larger vehicles take more deck space, fewer cars per load.
Transport type
Open is the default β cheapest, most carriers run it. Enclosed adds 40β60% to the open rate on the same route.
Live carrier availability on lane
Lanes with more active carriers right now price tighter. Lanes with fewer carriers (rural or low-volume routes) need a premium to attract a truck.
Season multiplier
Snowbird routes (Northeast/Midwest β Florida) peak OctβNov and MarβMay at 10β20% above baseline. Summer is also a peak. Off-peak windows price lower.
Pickup flexibility
Flexible pickup window (3β5 days) prices lower than a guaranteed single-day window. Carriers route loads more efficiently when they have room to plan.
If your quote looks $100 cheaper from another broker, check whether they're applying all six. Most aren't. That's why their number changes at booking and ours doesn't.
Honest Take
When the calculator might run off
Six conditions where the live quote may shift before a carrier is assigned β and why
The calculator hits within $50 of the booked price on roughly 90% of standard shipments. The other 10% β these are the conditions where live carrier reality diverges from the engine's first read. We'd rather tell you up front than surprise you at booking:
Rural ZIPs 30+ miles off interstate
Carriers add $50β$100 for deadhead miles when pickup or delivery is far from a major highway corridor.
Peak snowbird booking weeks
Northeast/Midwest β Florida lanes spike OctβNov and MarβMay. Demand can outpace what the engine modeled the prior week.
Sub-300 mile hauls
Regional carriers handle these. Fewer trucks on short lanes means more rate volatility β the calculator gives a range, not a fixed number.
Inoperable or non-running vehicles
Winch-equipped carriers required. The carrier pool shrinks and pricing varies more by which specific trucks are available.
Last-minute requests (under 48 hours)
Carriers re-route to take rush loads, which costs them planned-route revenue. Expect a 10β20% premium versus the calculator base.
Winter mountain pass routes
I-70 Eisenhower, I-80 Donner, I-90 through the Rockies. Salt, ice, and chain laws affect both pricing and timing.
If your shipment falls into any of these, call us before booking. We'll explain what the engine read and what the real range likely is. For high-value vehicles in these categories, enclosed auto transport may be the better call.

FAQ
Car shipping quote β common questions
Eight things customers ask before booking
How do I get a car shipping quote?
Enter your pickup ZIP, delivery ZIP, vehicle details, and transport type into the calculator above. You'll get a real price in under 60 seconds β no phone call required. Our pricing engine pulls live carrier lane data to generate a quote based on actual market conditions, not guesswork.
How accurate is the car shipping quote?
Our quotes are based on live carrier lane data updated daily by our dispatch team. Unlike static calculators that use outdated averages, our pricing engine pulls real-time data from active carriers on your specific route. The quote you see is what you pay β that's our Navi Price Guarantee.
What affects my car shipping quote?
Six factors drive your final price: distance (longer routes cost more but less per mile), vehicle size (trucks and SUVs cost more than sedans), transport type (enclosed adds 40β60% over open), season (summer and snowbird peaks raise prices), carrier availability on your lane, and pickup flexibility (flexible dates are cheaper than guaranteed windows).
Is the car shipping quote free?
Yes. Getting a quote costs nothing and there is no obligation to book. There is also zero upfront payment required when you do decide to book β you only pay when a carrier is confirmed and your vehicle is ready for pickup.
How long is a car shipping quote valid?
Car shipping quotes are typically valid for 7 days. Carrier rates fluctuate daily based on fuel costs and lane demand, so locking in your booking sooner rather than later protects your rate. Our Navi Price Guarantee means that once you book, the price is locked β we cover any difference up to $200 if carrier rates shift.
Why is my car shipping quote different from other companies?
Many brokers use artificially low quotes to get you to call, then raise the price at booking. Our pricing engine prices based on what carriers are actually accepting on your lane right now. A quote that looks $100 cheaper from a competitor will often end up $200β$400 higher by the time a carrier is assigned. We price accurately the first time.
Can I get a quote for an inoperable or non-running vehicle?
Yes. Select "non-running" in the vehicle condition field in the calculator above. Non-running vehicles require winch-equipped carriers and typically cost $150β$300 more than standard transport. The calculator accounts for this automatically.
How do I get the cheapest car shipping quote?
Four things lower your quote: choose open transport over enclosed, book 5β7 days ahead instead of last minute, use flexible pickup dates instead of a guaranteed window, and ship from a major metro rather than a rural ZIP. Avoiding peak season (summer and OctoberβApril on snowbird routes) also reduces your rate by 10β25%.
