College Student Car Shipping Snapshot

Quick Decision

Ship the car or drive it to campus?

The honest tradeoff for student moves — distance and timing matter most

Head to Head

Student shipping vs driving yourself to campus

Real comparison on a typical 1,000-mile student move (e.g. Northeast → Florida, Midwest → Southeast)

For most student moves above 500 miles, shipping + flying ends up costing about the same as driving once you factor in fuel, hotels, food, and the 1,000+ miles of wear added to the vehicle. The 20% student discount tilts the math even further toward shipping. The intangibles — student safety, parent peace of mind, no missed days — are the real value.

Academic Calendar Timing

When to book student car shipping

Demand follows the academic calendar — book early to lock in your move-in date

The booking tip: For August move-in shipments, book by mid-July. For May move-outs, book by mid-April. Last-minute moves during peak weeks may require express service which still qualifies for the student discount.

The Process

How student car shipping works

4 steps from quote to campus delivery — student discount applied automatically

Transparent Pricing

What student car shipping actually costs after the discount

Standard rates with the 20% student discount automatically applied

Student car shipping is priced like standard auto transport — distance, vehicle type, and transport method (open vs enclosed) determine the rate — then the 20% student discount is applied automatically when enrollment is verified. Average student savings run $150–$250 per shipment, depending on the route. Open transport is the most common and cost-effective choice for student vehicles. Enclosed is rarely necessary unless the student is shipping a luxury or classic vehicle.

Student-discounted pricing by distance

Prices shown reflect open transport on a standard sedan after the 20% verified student discount. SUVs add 15–20%. Trucks add 20–25%. Enclosed transport adds 40–60% before the discount. Peak periods (Aug–Sep, Mar–May) can add 10–15% to base rates.

What changes the price for a student shipment

  • Distance. Per-mile rate steps down as distance increases. Local moves (under 500 mi) are the most expensive per mile; cross-country lanes are the cheapest per mile.
  • Vehicle type. Standard sedans are the baseline. SUVs add 15–20%. Trucks add 20–25%. Most student vehicles fall into the sedan or small SUV category.
  • Season. August–September move-in week and March–May move-out/spring break are peak seasons. Off-peak summer (June–July) is the cheapest window of the year.
  • Transport type. Open transport is the standard and cost-effective choice for student vehicles. Enclosed transport adds 40–60% — only worth it for luxury or classic vehicles.
  • Booking lead time. 3–4 weeks ahead during peak hits the best pricing. Last-minute peak shipments may require express service (express still qualifies for the student discount).
  • Campus accessibility. Some campuses don't allow commercial trucks on internal roads. Delivery may happen at a nearby meeting point — coordinated at booking, no extra cost.
  • Referral bonus. Refer a classmate or roommate and both of you receive credits toward future shipments.

For Parents — Carrier Vetting

Who's driving your student's car — 6 checks before any carrier touches it

For parents: the vetting standard for your student's vehicle is the same as for any vehicle we ship

Handing your child's car keys to a stranger is uncomfortable. We get it. After moving more than 55,000 vehicles over 10+ years, here's the vetting standard we apply to every single carrier — student shipment or otherwise. Six checks. No exceptions. Even when the timeline is tight or the rate is low.

Parents can track their student's vehicle in real time through Navi Track 360™ — location updates, ETA changes, and delivery confirmations sent directly to your phone. Direct dispatcher contact available 24/7 if anything mid-route needs attention.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to the most common student and parent questions

How does the 20% student discount work?

Eligible students at any accredited U.S. or international college or university receive 20% off our standard transport rates. Discount applies automatically when enrollment is verified at booking with a valid student ID or .edu email address. Average savings: $150–$250 per shipment. The discount stacks with our standard policies (no upfront payment, 100 lbs personal items free) and applies to express service as well.

How much does it cost to ship a car to college?

After the 20% student discount: $360–$480 for local moves (under 500 mi), $480–$680 for medium-distance (500–1,000 mi), $720–$960 for cross-country (1,000–2,000 mi), $880–$1,200 for coast-to-coast. Open transport on a standard sedan. SUVs add 15–20%, trucks 20–25%. Peak periods (Aug–Sep, Mar–May) can add 10–15% to base rates.

Can a parent book on behalf of a student?

Yes. Parents commonly book the shipment for their student. The student discount still applies as long as the student's enrollment is verified — a photo of the student ID or the .edu email address works. Parent can be the primary contact, the billing party, and the recipient if needed. Just designate the student or parent as the pickup/delivery contact on the booking.

Can someone else accept delivery of the car?

Yes. A family member, friend, roommate, RA, or trusted classmate can accept the vehicle on the student's behalf. They must be at least 18 years old and prepared to sign the Bill of Lading (the inspection and delivery report). Let us know in advance who will be present so the driver has their name and phone number on file.

Can you deliver directly to a college campus?

In most cases, yes — but it depends on campus rules. Larger universities with wide internal roads usually allow commercial trucks for direct delivery. Smaller campuses, urban schools, or campuses with narrow access roads often restrict large vehicles. In those cases, we arrange delivery at a nearby parking lot, street, or off-campus location coordinated with the driver. Provide campus details at booking and we'll work out the best delivery spot.

Can I pack personal items in the car when shipping?

Yes — up to 100 lbs of personal belongings in the trunk or cargo area at no extra cost, secured in a box or suitcase. Common student items: bedding, clothing, books, dorm supplies, small electronics. Personal items are not covered by the carrier's cargo insurance, so don't pack anything irreplaceable. Items in the cabin (passenger compartment) are usually not allowed.

When should I book for August move-in week?

For August move-in shipments, book by mid-July. Carriers fill up fast around major university move-in weeks. Last-minute August shipments may require express service (which still qualifies for the student discount). For May move-outs, book by mid-April.

What's the cheapest way for students to ship a car?

Choose open transport (standard for student vehicles), book 3–4 weeks ahead during peak periods, ship during off-peak summer months when possible, and stack the 20% student discount with the referral program — refer a classmate or roommate and both of you receive credits toward future shipments.

Is the car insured during transport?

Yes. Every shipment is covered by the carrier's cargo insurance during transit. Open transport carriers carry $100K–$250K cargo coverage per vehicle. Enclosed transport carries $250K–$1M. Active coverage is verified on every carrier before assignment. The student discount doesn't change the coverage standard — same vetting applies to every shipment.

Do international students qualify for the discount?

Yes. International students at U.S. colleges and universities qualify for the 20% student discount with the same verification requirements (valid student ID or .edu email). The discount applies to vehicle shipments within the U.S. only — for international car shipping outside the U.S., separate pricing applies.

Can multiple students or family members share a shipment?

Yes. Multi-vehicle shipments are common for families with multiple kids in college or siblings heading to nearby schools. Multiple vehicles often qualify for an additional per-vehicle discount on top of the student discount because the carrier consolidates loading at a single pickup.

How do parents track the vehicle in transit?

Every shipment includes real-time GPS tracking through Navi Track 360™. Parents receive pickup and delivery ETAs, location updates throughout transit, and direct dispatcher access if anything mid-route needs attention — all tied to the order number. 24/7 support available via phone, SMS, and chat.
